Nurse, Massage Therapist, Self Care Junkie and creator of Brooke Martin Wellness.
Guess what? I too don't have it all figured out. Actually I've spent the last nine years trying to figure out what I'm going to "be" when I grow up.
But you know what I realized?
I don't need to "be" anything, I'm actually an incredibly unique product of every single experience, class, workshop, 12-hour shift, and work Christmas party that I've had over those nine + years.
When I allowed myself to step back and see all that I have created over that time, that's when the real magic happened.
I started this journey back in 2009, when I entered Nursing School at Dalhousie University. It was then that I realized I was multi-passionate. While I was at Dal, I completed extra education in Oncology Nursing and achieved excellence awards in Palliative Care and Nutrition. I also held part time jobs as a physiotherapy assistant for the women's varsity volleyball team, and as a care assistant at one of the local nursing homes.
After Nursing School graduation, I spent six years at the IWK Children's Hospital. I gained three years experience in the Oncology Ward before moving to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. On my days off, I taught fitness and yoga classes at my twin sister's gym in Dartmouth. During these six years, I also opened up my own energy bar biz (Buff Bakery), which helped feed my health and wellness community and my entrepreneurial spirit for a few years.
On Sundays, I would volunteer at an outreach foot care clinic which is truly what opened many doors for me and my future as a Foot Care Specialist. I learned very quickly how such a small part of our bodies can have a huge impact on our overall health and wellbeing. I went on to study the feet more in-depth, completing education in Advanced and Diabetic Foot Care as well as spending shadow shifts with Pedorthists.
This is why I love the term, "multi-passionate". It fits me to a T!
You see, I have a passion for medicine, but not only the medicine that requires mixing powders with sterile water in a vial, and plugging numbers into a machine. I have a passion for the people receiving the medicine from the vials and who are connected to the machine. I want to be able to connect with people like you in a relaxed environment, hear your story, and work with you to achieve your health goals long after you've left the the hospital. Or better yet, help prevent you from getting there in the first place.
So I put my thinking cap on and through a series of conversations and glasses of coffee, tea & wine with friends and mentors I decided I needed to add one more thing to my list of qualifications to become truly holistic. So, I enrolled into ICT Northumberland College's Massage Therapy program where I received my RMT title as well as an Excellence in Massage Therapy award. Through my background as a Registered Nurse specializing in Advanced Foot Care fused with Massage Therapy, I gained the ability to treat more conditions, and so Brooke Martin Wellness was created.
So, are my services for you? I'm glad you asked!
